Apologies from Winnipeg!

Please continue to write your responses on the blog. They are quite revealing and in some ways highlight the differences and similarities between the students in Amantea and those here in Winnipeg. Unfortunately my students are not in class this week, but they shall return on Monday. Hopefully we will see some response soon. In the meantime here are some comments made by three of my students.

hello everybody!!!

I' m Maggie and I chosen this extract:

ON THE FIRST LOOKING AT THE HILL

"A huge panettone that some giant had placed on the plane."

Michele and his friends were in Melichetti' s farm when they saw, for the first time, the huge hill.

"...the others hills, behind, were like dwarves, compared to that huge dome"

The children thought "how is that we didn' t ever seen it...?"

They didn' t believe their eyes and desired to explore it. So, they started a race.

The hill was splendid, without a tree, only an enormous expanse of wheat.

The hill represented for the children happiness, adventure, natural beauty, an enchanted place; but the hill hides

darkness corruption in the oldest world.

I' m sorry for my errors!... :-) bye bye

Mariavittoria's classwork

Hello everybody!

I'm Mariavittoria,a Mrs Campora student...I choose the first excerpt:

Michele: a brother, a fether, a mother.

" She was faking, she was tired. I'm going on, I said to myself. But what if she really was hurt?"

This is my classwork:

The theme of this excerpt for me and for my teacher(see the title) is the character of Michele...he is a child-man because he is 9 years old but he is a father and a mother to himself and to Maria. He alone can decide what is somehow?! Infact when Maria falls off a bike, she calls:"Michele!"..but the others children hurt oneself crying they call "Mum! Mum!" or "Daddy!Daddy!"...Maria calls "MicheleMichele!"

In the excerpt, we find:

A plaintive litthe voice answered me: Michele

Have you hurt yourself?

yes, come here.

Where've you hurt yourself?

It is an example of as michele is worried for his sister and he forgets the race, the game, the forfeit, Skull...for he helps Maria, like a parent.

I'm sorry for any possible error ..Bye bye....Mariavittoria!!!

Mattia's CLASSWORK

Hello evrybody, I'm Mattia and at mr Campora's classwork I chose this item.

5 - On first looking at the hill.

" A huge panettone that some giant had placed on the plane". (page 10)

Children are taking a minute breath, after the smell meeting with Melichetti. Skull is hungry for Barbara's large mouth, rounding alone looking for his revenge. When he turns back to the others pointing a big golden hill.

"Let's climb it, let's climb that mountain!"

They didn't see it until that moment. An adventure calling a better one.

"Now that was an adventure, damn Melichetti's pig."

The golden hill could be seen as Dante's Purgatory; giant is God himself; under this beautiful hill there is the Hell: Filippo's dark hole.

Giant is the author, that want children find it, even to let's the story goes on.

Author is God, children are like Dante's Ulysses, they are curious ; the place is a loner one, through which nobody ever passes, like the Gibilterra's rocks over which no man is gone:

"And we'll put our flag on the summit. So if anyone climbs up there, they'll know we got there first."

"An impaled hen might be taken as a sign of witchcraft."

Children with this such a flag are like Ulysses (profan) that reach a holy place; only Michele is different from the others, he'll be for Filippo the Caretaker Angel, coming for taking him to the Heaven - out of the story.
